Resume Cover Letters Get You In the Door
Don't Blow It With Yours
A great resume cover letter is the golden key to any job search.
Yet despite this fact, an estimated 85% of cover letters are
so flawed that the senders never land an interview.
I have reviewed several thousand cover letters since
I founded www.JobHuntingLetters.com. Not even 10% of those letters
were acceptable. Recently I advertised for a full-time,
experienced creative director. "One person department, work directly
with CEO," read the blind ad, which also requested a
cover letter. Roughly 100 of the 150 job seekers sent cover
letters. Two-thirds contained mistakes (including a misspelled
current job title). Fifteen applicants addressed me as "To
whom it may concern" even though my name was clearly
posted in the ad.
Equally distressing, a mere six cover letters specifically
addressed the qualifications I listed in the ad. And only
three piqued my interest enough to read the senders' resumes.
The best resume cover letter referenced the job and what the
applicant was going to do to make my company better. At that
moment in my mind, this applicant seemed like the perfect
person for the job.
This applicant's breezy but enthusiastic letter
offered detailed examples of her entrepreneurial creative
experience. The applicant tempered her bravado with humor. "I've always been a
sort of "one-man band" (albeit of the feminine persuasion!)
and in these lean economic times, I'm finding that really
comes in handy," she wrote.
The applicant concluded her four-paragraph resume cover letter
with the tantalizing comment that she had numerous related
creative ideas. ...By dropping an intriguing thought near
the end of a resume cover letter it entices the hiring manager
to follow up with you to find out more.
Craft a Compelling
Resume Cover Letter
Accelerate Your Future
If what is written in your resume cover letter can be written
by the person who did the job before or with you, then you
haven't done yourself justice. It's as simple as that.
Any person who reads resume cover letters
often knows how much they follow the same old pattern.
They start with "The
writer would like to apply for a position with your company,"
or "With reference to your advertisement online, the
writer wishes to apply for said position." Then they
follow with a monotonous description of personal characteristics,
jobs previously held, educational institutions attended, throw
in some references, and end with, "Hoping to receive
consideration for an interview," or something equally
dull. Naturally, any person who hires people
is bored with reading these resume cover letters, and
turns with relief to one that is written in a more interesting
style.
This Is How It's Done. Here Is The Cookbook. Just Follow Along
And Learn.
I've written hundreds of resume cover letters for clients.
In doing so, I discovered a secret. By simply analyzing which
of my resume cover letters delivered interviews and which
did not, I quickly discovered a pattern. A pattern that you
can easily duplicate right now! ...Success, like many things
in life, is simply a matter of understanding what works and
what does not.
What Some Job Hunters Had To Say:
"I spent hours trying to compose my resume cover letter
and needed help. Your examples were just what I needed! The
strategy is an eye-opener." -Jessica McHale"A brilliant
cover letter...I read it and rewrote it. If I don't get job
interviews now, I should probably change careers." -Bruce
Harrison"Tom, your checklist on questions to ask during
an interview are exceptional and worth the price alone. ...I'll
let you know how my new job works out." -Dan Murray"Hi
Tom: Your cover letter and resumes helped me land a job interview
this week! I'll let you know if I get the job. Thanks!"
-Randy Hamilton

Look Like A Million For Less Than The Price Of Lunch
There are a lot of gimmicks out there, but my Proven Resume
Cover Letter is no gimmick, it's for real.
The only chance you have to inject a little bit of personality
is in the resume cover letter, and a good one shows who you
are, what skills you possess, and what kind of communicator
you are. The resume is just the supporting details.
Never forget that your writing style is an expression of
what's inside of you; it's your inescapable calling card.
It immediately announces who you are, how you operate, and
what you expect from yourself as well as others. What's more,
in no other time in history is it so important to use the
right words in the right place in the right way to convey
what we have in our minds because...there are no job offers
for second place.
Make Every Word Count
Keep it short - Keep it distinctive!
The Ten Commandments contain 297 words, the Bill of Rights
463 words, and Lincoln's Gettysburg Address 266 words. Keep
your resume cover letter short.
Long resume cover letters
just don't get read. A short, "punchy"
resume cover letter,
like good advertising copy, gets
the busy reader's attention. Every
resume cover letter should be written
with this single thought in mind.
If too much information is offered,
the reader gets bored within seconds,
they lose interest and
you do not get an interview, much
less the job offer.
Your resume cover letter is simply the appetizer, whetting
the appetite. The main course -you- is to follow.
